Advocacy Alert: Labor and LNP Release Economic Recovery Plans

21st August 2020

This week both Labor and LNP have released their economic recovery plans for Queensland.

Yesterday at the CEDA State of the State address, the Premier released the Queensland Government’s Economic Recovery Plan. It focuses on six key areas:

1. Safeguarding our Health
2. Backing Small Business
3. Making it for Queensland
4. Building Queensland
5. Growing our Regions
6. Investing in Skills

The Government also issued a Capital Program 2020 Update which includes more than $13.9 billion worth of infrastructure funding across the state. The update reaffirms the Government's commitment to a $51.8 billion program of work over the next four years.

The Premier spoke about the importance of the Agriculture and Resources industries. Specifically, projects like CopperString2.0 and how reducing the cost of power in the North West Minerals Province would unlock the future potential of the region and create thousands of jobs. The Premier also spoke about new economy minerals their processing, manufacturing and Hydrogen production in North Queensland.

Earlier in the week, the Opposition Leader announced the LNP’s Economic Plan which is based on four foundations:
1. Investing for growth
2. Unleashing Queensland Industry
3. Supercharging the regions
4. Securing our children’s future

A key component of this plan was the establishment of an Economic Recovery Agency charged with delivering a 100 day action plan. A New Co-ordinator-General will lead the Agency and will be responsible for delivering a multitude of job-generating projects. The Agency will also conduct an audit of stalled major projects and fast track their approvals.

Last week, Townsville Enterprise, NQROC and TaskforceNQ traveled to Brisbane to meet with members of the Government, Opposition and minor parties to discuss the Townsville North Queensland Projects and Policies document – Unlock the North. It is positive to see a number of the projects and policies align to both the Government's and the Opposition’s Economic Recovery Plan and the role the North will plan in the economic recovery of the State.

Townsville Enterprise will continue to engage with all political parties to secure commitments for the region.  Unlocking the North through Government investment in enabling infrastructure and the right policy framework will continue to be a key part of our advocacy campaign in the lead up to the Queensland State Election in October.
