Tourism volunteers celebrated for National Volunteers Week

15th May 2023

Townsville Enterprise is celebrating their 40+ tourism volunteers as part of National Volunteers Week (NVW).

NVW is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, and this year is being held on 15 – 21 May 2023.

Townsville Enterprise CEO, Claudia Brumme-Smith said our tourism volunteers are the heart of Townsville Enterprise.

“Our tourism volunteers are the heart of TEL and have been part of the organisation for more than 30 years. Their dedication and beautiful smiles make our visitors feel welcomed and appreciated,” Mrs Brumme-Smith said.

“Each year, we welcome over 12,500 visitors to our Visitor Information Centre in Flinders Square. But outside of this, our tourism volunteers attend Cruise Ship Welcomes, new flight launches and events to welcome visitors and provide them with information about our region.

“Collectively, our tourism volunteers have given over 400 years of service to Townsville Enterprise and the region and worked over 5,000 hours per year in the Visitor Information Centre and at events. We cannot thank them enough for what they do.”

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said volunteers make the Townsville community function in such a cohesive way.

“They are the lifeblood of sporting clubs, community associations and other interest groups,” Cr Hill said.

Thais Solano has been a Townsville Enterprise tourism volunteer for eight years.

“As a volunteer I have the pleasure to guide and inform our visitors of Townsville and the region’s attractions. I also enjoy the opportunity to learn and discover new projects and important developments through product presentations by TEL,” Mrs Solano said.

“I have been a volunteer for eight years and haven't lost the excitement and enthusiasm, I just love it.”
