19th May 2023

More than 200 students from nine American universities that will visit Townsville North Queensland.

Townsville Enterprise CEO, Claudia Brumme-Smith said international students back in our region is another sign of our recovery post pandemic.

“In 2019, Townsville Enterprise coordinated a U.S. mission through the EduTourism Consortium and two of the universities visiting the region now are a result of this mission,” Mrs Brumme-Smith said.

“Townsville Enterprise kept connected with AUIP throughout the pandemic by sharing content and hosting virtual famils. It is great to finally have students back and learning in person.”

AUIP, International Programs and Development Director, Mary Ogburn said Townsville is one of our hubs of activity this time of year.

“During these weeks the students will be completing field study projects on Magnetic Island, seeing wildlife conservation work at Billabong Sanctuary, talking with local experts at James Cook University, learning from Traditional Owners at Mungalla Station and gaining a full understanding of the coastal eco-system in the Paluma Range,” Ms Ogburn said.

“The highlights for many are the course sessions with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef.

“The students represent a full range of disciplines, from biology to political science to communications.”

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Reef Education and Engagement Director, Fred Nucifora is thrilled to have EduTourism groups back in Townsville North Queensland.

“It’s great to have EduTourism groups back, after what seemed like a lifetime of disconnection during the pandemic. We utilised videoconferencing technology during this time to remain connected with our international universities and facilitated educational content virtually,” Mr Nucifora said.

“The international study abroad programs delivered in the Townsville North Queensland region are designed to provide the perfect combination of exceptional teaching and learning opportunities in stunning environmental settings.”

The universities include Virginia Tech, Wake Forest University, Miami University, Ohio State University, Texas A&M and Baylor Universities, University of Texas at Austin, Highpoint University and the University of Florida.
