Outback township of Charters Towers has been named a finalist as one of Queensland’s best holiday destinations now competing for top honours in the 2022 Queensland Top Tourism Town Awards.
Presented by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), the Awards program recognises and celebrates Queensland’s outstanding regional destinations. Honouring communities across the state who demonstrate a commitment to visitor excellence.
Charters Towers Regional Council Mayor Frank Beveridge said the historic gold mining township had experienced a real evolution in the past few years, with a new destination brand and attention from major television show productions putting the region firmly in the spotlight.
“The awards are a testament to our region’s continued growth and we’re proud to have made finalist, amongst some of Queensland best destinations,” Mayor Beveridge said.
“We encourage those who have experienced our region first-hand, or even those who have dreamed and plan to visit, to put the vote where it matters and help our region secure a title, I believe it deserves.”
Regional tourism organisation for Townsville North Queensland (including Charters Towers) Townsville Enterprise Visitor Economy and Marketing Director Lisa Woolfe says the accolade has broader halo effects for the entire region and is a huge opportunity to showcase the best our diverse region has to offer.
“Charters Towers is a unique Outback offering in Townsville North Queensland, and we’re thrilled to see this region make finalist amongst a competitive list of Queensland contenders,” Ms Woolfe said.
“With hero tour products, unrivalled gold mining history and quintessential outback environments, Charters Towers is one of our key destinations in our region, particularly for the growing drive market as we head into the Winter period.”
After an exhaustive judging process by an expert panel, QTIC CEO Brett Fraser says that the Top Tourism Town Award winners will now be decided by the public. Encouraging everyone to vote for their favourite Queensland holiday gem.
“From a shortlist of 23 exceptional destinations, we’re calling on the public to have their say and to share with us their best-loved Queensland towns,” Mr Fraser said.
“All of the finalists offer guests amazing visitor experiences. From historic buildings in Rockhampton and Charters Towers, to perfect coastal escapes in Port Douglas and Rainbow Beach, these communities have rallied together and showcase the best of our state”

Voting is now open until 23 May, with every voter going in the draw to win a $2,000 Apollo motorhome holiday.
