Calls for industry leaders to shape future of tourism on Magnetic Island

15th January 2024

Townsville Enterprise, under the guidance of the Magnetic Island Masterplan steering committee, is seeking two industry representatives for the newly formed Magnetic Island Tourism Alliance (MITA).

An outcome of the Magnetic Island Tourism Masterplan – launched in 2023, the Magnetic Island Tourism Alliance (MITA) will be a collaborative body established to provide guidance and advice in relation to the implementation of sustainable tourism developments and projects that are identified within the Magnetic Island Tourism Masterplan, with the overall mission of striving for sustainable tourism development.

Townsville Enterprise Director Visitor Economy and Marketing, Lisa Woolfe said the establishment of a cohesive Tourism Alliance – guided by industry – is the next crucial step in delivering opportunities for the island.
“As the Destination Management Organisation for Townsville North Queensland, Townsville Enterprise is looking forward to being part of this next evolution for the island, which we know contributes $380.2 million to our visitor economy each year,” Mrs Woolfe said.

“This Tourism Masterplan is our blueprint to ensure visitor growth is managed sustainably to protect the natural environment and deliver a world-class, visitor experience; to do this, a cohesive, and well-represented Alliance backed by industry, government and community is the only way this vision will become a reality.”

“We are seeking passionate and experienced industry representatives who possess a deep understanding of the regional, national and global tourism landscape and who are able to effectively network and advocate for Magnetic Island – and we know there are many that fit the criteria”.

The Alliance, which is currently represented by key stakeholder groups – including local state and federal Government as well as community groups will play a vital role in facilitating the exchange of information and actively contributing to the growth of tourism on Magnetic Island.

Tourism Magnetic Island Chair and industry representative on the Alliance, Deb Barber said the Magnetic Island Tourism Masterplan has enabled locals, businesses, tourism operators and government to work together.
“Collaborative representation is vitally important in decision making, information sharing and engaging with stakeholders to obtain the best outcome for tourism on Magnetic Island.” Mrs Barber said.

“I am excited to be part of a collaborative and strategic group that will guide and influence destination planning and development on Magnetic Island.”
