Build-to-Rent model progressing for North Queensland

19th October 2022

Townsville is currently experiencing a housing crisis, with many people in the region facing housing stress and who do not have access to long-term, secure, and affordable housing.

Townsville Enterprise CEO, Claudia Brumme-Smith said Townsville Enterprise is working closely with Townsville City Council and the private sector to combat the affordable housing issue in the region.

“We continually hear from our members and the business community, that after staff shortages, affordable housing is the next biggest challenge they face,” Mrs Brumme-Smith said.

“Together with Council and the private sector, we are investigating a Build-to-Rent model which will provide a long-term solution of high-density, low-cost housing backed by superfunds.”

“Build-to-Rent apartment complexes are designed and constructed by a developer who retains ownership of the building when it’s complete. Sites in the CBD such as the North Rail Yards could provide a prime location to develop this housing solution.”

“Affordable housing is open to a broader range of incomes than social housing. This model will attract and retain critical workers which will ensure the region has the necessary workforce to continue to experience record levels of growth.”

“Short-term solutions also being investigated include converting unused buildings in the CBD to high-density affordable accommodation and relocation packages from the private sector to assist with purchasing a property.”
