Advocacy Alert: Locals Building Up Locals

17th April 2020

Townsville Enterprise is launching the next phase of its Economic Action Plan calling on local businesses to nominate their job generating project that could be supported or fast-tracked by State or Federal Governments and provide local jobs as the region moves into the COVID-19 recovery phase.

  • Does your business have a job generating project based in North Queensland?
  • Nominate your project to our 'Locals Building Up Locals' database and it could be supported or fast-tracked by State and Federal Governments as we move towards the COVID-19 economic recovery phase.

Four weeks ago, we delivered an Economic Action Plan to the State and Federal Governments identifying the immediate and long term projects and policies that would not only support the community through the initial impacts of coronavirus but also look to the future and at North Queensland’s major projects that could lead the nation’s economic recovery. This initiative builds upon that database of projects to ensure no stone is left unturned and we are providing that information in a coordinated manner.

Announcements from the Federal and State Governments to look at projects that might be shovel ready or have parts that can be shovel ready are welcomed as this will assist in keeping people working now, create employment opportunities and turbocharge the recovery.

This next part of our economic recovery plan, the ‘Locals Building up Locals’ initiative, aims to generate local jobs and stimulate a regional economic injection in small projects, that will complement the larger projects, at a time that will be needed more than ever.

Here we will build upon the database of local North Queensland projects to continuously update State and Federal Governments to ensure the North is front of mind during the first stages of recovery. This will ready our local State and Federal MPs with a clear pipeline of projects, along with key project details, that can be supported or fast-tracked.

From the CEO, Patricia O'Callaghan...

These next six months are crucial. That's why we're launching this next phase of our Economic Action Plan with a clear focus on economic recovery. We're looking forward to continuing to work closely with our local business community through this next stage, along with our State and Federal government representatives, to get your projects turning sod where possible and providing jobs across the region.

The Locals Building Up Locals initiative is all about the projects for the local tradies, local surveyors, and local engineers among others, and whilst Townsville Enterprise is not the owners, assessors or funders, we will be an advocate to ensure Government is well aware of what is shovel or employment ready – big or small - in North Queensland.

While we are in continuous discussions with State and Federal Governments on nation building projects like Hells Gates, CopperString and the Museum of Underwater Art, it's important we are also focused on those local business projects that will keep the economy ticking as we commence the road to recovery.

We acknowledge that not every idea can ever be funded, but there is an opportunity for an accelerated works program to get people into jobs now across a broad spectrum of professions. Whilst Job Keeper and the range of other business initiatives and support measures are welcomed, these projects are able to get people working as the country comes out of hibernation.

It’s also important to note that our North Queensland councils have a pipeline of public works that can be potentially supported by the State and Federal Government. There have been great examples of local businesses benefiting from our councils through the Works for Queensland initiatives and those sorts of examples are critical in providing local jobs.

We've had great support and engagement from our six State and Federal Government Members of Parliament who have been representing this region at the highest levels through the pandemic. It will only be together that our region will be able to get through this crisis.

As a part of the North’s recovery, we want to ensure no stone is left unturned, and the Locals Building Up Locals initiative will add to our long-term focus on ensuring the North fires as soon as the health crisis abates.
