Advocacy Alert: Local Government Election Priorities 2020

11th March 2020

Measures to help create jobs, attract investment, stimulate pride and position North Queensland strongly for the future underpin Townsville Enterprise’s 2020 Local Government Election Priorities.

Townsville Enterprise has consulted with members to put forward a range of priorities for the next term of Government for Townsville, Burdekin, Hinchinbrook, Palm Island and Charters Towers that have a focus on marketing the destination to attract visitors and investment, growing the population and backing a range of local business building initiatives .

Now more than ever, Local Government and the business community needs to be united in attempts to drive jobs and investment and the 2020 Local Government Election platform is an opportunity to think more innovatively to provide solutions to current and future problems.

What Townsville and the broader North Queensland region has been through in the past 12 months, following the 2019 monsoonal event, has been nothing short of extraordinary and yet whilst recovery efforts continue, our community faces further economic headwinds with the growing Coronavirus crisis and an unpredictable global economy now having impacts locally.

Across the past term of Government, the successful advocacy partnership between the five North Queensland Councils, Townsville Enterprise and other key business and government stakeholders has resulted in several major wins for the community. The approval of the $2B Adani Carmichael Mine, the recent opening of the $293.5M Queensland Country Bank Stadium, the full funding of the $193M Port Channel Widening, over $400M towards the Haughton Water Pipeline, $8M to fund the Museum of Underwater Art and $54M to progress the business case of the Hells Gates Dam and construction of Big Rocks Weir in Charters Towers, were just some of the local wins for a community that was united in efforts.

But we are not out of the woods yet and with major challenges in front of us, the 2020 Local Government Election platform provides an opportunity for our Local Governments to consider commitments to further initiatives to turbocharge jobs, investment, business confidence and pride.

We know a number of these discussions will continue into the next term of Government and we look forward to working through these priorities with our five councils to make us a stronger North Queensland for a stronger Australia.
