Advocacy Alert: United Front to Keep Our Copper and Protect North Queensland Jobs
Momentum is building behind the Keep Our Copper campaign, with both the Federal and Queensland Governments stepping up their engagement with industry to secure a long-term solution for the Mount Isa copper smelter and Townsville refinery.
This week Townsville Enterprise has met with Queensland Premier Hon David Crisafulli as well as held a meeting with Federal Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science, Senator the Hon Tim Ayres.
Minister Ayres and Minister Last has today travelled to Mount Isa for a series of stakeholder and community meetings and a tour of the Mount Isa mine.
We appreciate and thank the Federal Minister for his quick response in visiting the Smelter as well as with us here in Townsville. We were pleased to see the Minister has been fully briefed on the issues and has a good understanding of the complexities, as well as a passion for protecting Australian manufacturing and mining jobs.
Our message has been clear, this is an urgent issue and the region is anxious - the industry and Government’s need to work together to do what’s needed to Keep our Copper in North Queensland.
