Cairns to Townsville Self Drive Itinerary

Day 1- 2 - Cairns, Port Douglas, Palm Cove 

The journey begins! Collect your car from Cairns Airport and head to your chosen destination of Cairns, Palm Cove or Port Douglas. Choose between the vibe of a thriving regional city, a laid back beachside village or a very cool beach and restaurant mecca. Once you’ve locked in your destination, the choices for accommodation are endless, ranging from resort hotel, to fully self contained luxury apartments or the uniqueness of a luxury North Queensland home. Finally, select your adventure for the next day with the opportunity for Bungee Jumping, a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, drifting down the waterways of a rainforest river, a standup paddle boarding experience, a guided cycling experience through the world class Mountain Bike trails or a canyoning experience in one of the spectacular waterfalls and crystal clear pools of the Tropical North. Better still, stay for some additional days and experience it all.

Overnight - Palm Cove, Cairns or Port Douglas (Nights 1 and 2)

Day 3-4 - Atherton Tablelands 

Today you head South out of Cairns. The sugar cane fields are a constant reminder that you are in Tropical North Queensland. You will drive past the two highest mountains in Queensland Mt Bellenden Ker and Mt Battle Frere. As you enter the small town of Innisfail, you will turn left and make your way up the Palmerston Highway to Mamu Canopy Boardwalk. This is a truly spectacular experience as you take in the Johnston River gorge and the World Heritage Wooroonooran Rainforest that surrounds it. Keep climbing up with Palmerston Highway and the waterfall circuit is well worth a visit to cool off before you check into some of the unique accommodation properties that the Tablelands are renowned for. Timber pole treehouses are a very different way to engage with the rainforest and there are a number of properties on the Tablelands that offer this incredible accommodation option. Depending on the time of year, light a fire and grab a red wine as you cocoon yourself away from the rest of the world.

Overnight - Atherton Tablelands (Nights 3 and 4)

Day 5-6 - Gulf Savannah 

Bid farewell to your rainforest treehouse and continue west towards the Gulf Savannah as you make your way through Ravenshoe, the highest town in Queensland and further west. The Undara Lava tubes are a must see, approximately 190,000 years ago, a large volcano erupted, spewing molten lava. The lava flowed rapidly down a dry riverbed leaving behind a series of hollow tubes that give an incredible insight into the evolution of our land. Heading further west you will find Talaroo Hot Springs which is Ewamian Peoples Country. Talaroo is a living cultural landscape for Ewamian people, rich with dreaming stories and centred around healing Hot Springs which form a lifeline through the ages. Choose your place of accommodation and don’t miss these incredible attractions.

Overnight - Gulf Savannah (Undara. Cobbald Gorge or Talaroo Hot Springs) (nights 5 and 6)


Day 7 - Charters Towers 

Bid farewell to your accommodation in the Gulf Savannah and begin your journey south. Your destination is the very Queensland town of Charters Towers. Step back in time and discover the authentic charm and elegance of this regional town. It is a living montage of Australian history and heritage.When gold was discovered in 1871, the town became a gold rush town and quickly grew to become the second largest in the state. Today you can really feel the history trough the magnificent heritage buildings which are testament to prosperity of years past. Day 8 - Townsville 

Make your way back towards the coast and the regional city of Townsville. The city combines a vibrant and bustling community, a relaxed North Queensland lifestyle, rich history and stunning natural wonders. Options for todays adventures include get up close with our native wildlife at Billabong Sanctuary or exploring the World Heritage Rainforest in Paluma Range National Park with NQ Cycle Journeys. Check into your room at The Ville Resort Casino and look out over the Coral Sea to Magnetic Island. Take a stroll along the Strand for a cocktail overlooking the water to Magnetic Island, stop in for a look at Jezzine Barracks or get wet and wild on a Jetski with Poseidon Adventures. Grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the City or head back to your accommodation which also boasts a bevy of different restaurants and bistros that are bound to delight.

Day 9-10  - Magnetic Island 

Begin your exploration of Magnetic Island. You are going to need a couple of days to really see what the island has to offer. From your accommodation walk down to Sealink terminal for your ferry crossing to the island, once there you will be met by Magnetic Island Tours. Your guide will take you on a journey through time and nature revealing the island’s fascinating past and abundant wildlife. That’s only the first part of the day - in the evening you will head out onto the water for a sunset sail with Pilgrim Magnetic Island. This stunning 58ft yacht will treat you to stunning views, a relaxed atmosphere and the best locally sourced food and wine. What a way to finish the day!

Day 11 - Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA)

The team from Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive will take you to visit the Museum of Underwater Art located in John Brewer Reef, 2 hours off the coast of Townsville. It is host to amazing coral reef bursting with a plethora of marine life and depths of the reef ranging from 16 metres up to the surface making it ideal for snorkelers and divers from beginners to experienced. Schools of bait fish are a common site, as well as an abundance of colourful reef fish including Parrot fish, Maori wrasse, Clown fish, Angel fish. Turtles, Stingrays, White tip, and Black tip reef sharks are often sighted.

Explore the Coral Greenhouse or the newly added Ocean Sentinels snorkel trail. Not a diver?
