Townsville Enterprise prepares to welcome footballs trans-Tasman rivalry to Townsville
Townsville soccer fans will be lacing up on 8 April as next year’s Women’s World Cup co-hosts, Australia and New Zealand, go head-to-head at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in the first of a two match friendly series.
This will be the first time the Matildas have played at home since their friendly series against the USA last November, and the first time they have played together as a team since February’s Asian Cup.
Townsville Enterprise Director Visitor Economy and Marketing Lisa Woolfe says securing the trans-Tasman game was a coup for the city and was a reflection on the incredible success of the State of Origin, Rugby Championship, and Oceania Rugby 7’s competitions hosted in the Northern capital last year.
“The Matildas are one of Australia’s most successful sporting teams and we are thrilled that they are coming to Townsville,” said Ms Woolfe
“Townsville continues to prove that we are Australia’s regional city of choice when it comes to hosting major events and watching the Matildas and Football Ferns go head-to-head at the stunning Queensland Country Bank Stadium will be no different.”
“We know these events are a windfall for Townsville and our tourism and hospitality sectors, generating millions for our local economy and highlighting what an incredible destination North Queensland is to visitors who come to see the game and on the broadcast for all those who watch from home.”
“The entire State is preparing for our history’s largest sporting event, the 2032 Olympic Games. Hosting the Matilda’s and Football Ferns are a perfect opportunity to further establish Townsville North Queensland as a premier sporting location and further build the case for our region to play a part in hosting events and training camps in the lead up to and during the Olympics.”
