Origin and music fans can be a part of “Footy Basecamp”

4th June 2021

A uniquely North Queensland experience for State of Origin and Australian music fans on the hunt for accommodation in Townsville next week has been launched today.

'Footy Basecamp’ will see 100 tents temporarily erected at Endeavour Park, Murray Sporting Complex from today to help ease Townsville’s accommodation pressures for the historic State of Origin clash next week.

The initiative has been a collaboration between the Townsville Cricket Club and Jodie Kennedy Event Management, who have partnered with the Regional Tourism Organisation and the Queensland Government to ensure every visitor to Townsville can be a part of the festivities next Wednesday.

There will be no heavy lifting or camping frustrations involved for guests, with the tents already in place including two single beds, linen, shared shower and toilet facilities, onsite bar, dedicated security, and transport to and from Queensland Country Bank Stadium on game day. ‘The Precinct’ is also directly across from Footy Basecamp with a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, and bars on offer.

Townsville Enterprise CEO, Claudia Brumme-Smith encouraged all footy and music fans to consider the distinctively North Queensland experience.

"Footy Basecamp is a unique accommodation option we're pitching to visitors in one of the most unique of situations," Ms Brumme-Smith said.

"No other city in Origin history has ever put on this event in such a short amount of time, yet here Townsville is less than a week out from hosting one of the greatest shows in the country.

“On top of that, the Queensland Government and Townsville City Council have announced a world-class line up of leading Australian music acts performing on the night. Whether you are a fan of the hard hits or the high notes, there is something for everyone in Townsville next Wednesday.

"We've left no stone unturned to welcome the influx of visitors into the region with open arms and provide a true taste of North Queensland hospitality. Not to mention our average winter temperatures of 25 degrees - Footy Basecamp is the perfect excuse to sleep out under the stars after cheering on your team and dancing to your band Wednesday night.

“Hosting an event of this scale is no mean feat for any city, but the badge of honour we will wear as the first regional centre to host an Origin is something we should all be very proud of.”

The cost is $285 per person per tent (twin share) for two nights (Tuesday 8 June and Wednesday 9 June). Bookings are open now at townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au (http://bit.ly/FootyBasecamp)
