Report reveals Townsville comes out on top as hydrogen hub

20th October 2022

Townsville Enterprise welcomes the report released by the Queensland Government today.

The Enabling Queensland’s Hydrogen Production and Export Opportunities Report was commissioned by the State to identify and evaluate each of Queensland’s key export regions for investors and trading partners.

Townsville Enterprise CEO, Claudia Brumme-Smith said the report confirms what we have always known, that Townsville North Queensland will be a hydrogen superpower.

“The report shows that Townsville North Queensland will be the centre of hydrogen production compared to places like Gladstone which has less than half the potential,” Mrs Brumme-Smith said.

“The report also highlights the need for transmission, as well as port and infrastructure upgrades to unlock our region’s potential which supports TEL’s advocacy for CopperString, Hells Gates Dam and Port of Townsville expansion projects.”

“It also highlights the need for common user infrastructure as the key enabler for us to expand from small to large scale. Hence the work the NQH2 Consortium is currently undertaking with support of State and Federal Government funding.”

“Having just arrived back from South Korea, the country plans to source a third of its energy from hydrogen by 2050. Townsville North Queensland has all the right ingredients to lead the nation’s green energy and hydrogen revolution, but we need to ensure we have the key infrastructure in place to unlock its potential.”
