Queensland's Major Project Pipeline Grows to Record $92 Billion

28th November 2023

The Queensland Major Contractors Association (QMCA) has officially launched the 2023 Queensland Major Project Pipeline Report today in Townsville at a Townsville Enterprise Event, revealing an impressive projection of a record-breaking $92 billion in major projects across the next five years for the state of Queensland but more importantly more than one third of this will be happening in the North of Queensland.

Townsville and the Northwest/Outback alone will contribute $17.3 billion to the overall $92 billion pipeline, showcasing the robust economic activity and growth within our region.

Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith expressed her excitement for the region’s growth in new economy industries.

“We are a city and region that is on the move, particularly with the CopperString announcement, but we are not a one-track pony here in North Queensland and there is much more to be excited about. Critical minerals, manufacturing, green energy, defence, ag and water are the strengths of the North,” Ms. Brumme-Smith said.

“This years report once again focusses on the resource challenge and opportunities that pipeline offers through input from the team at Construction Skills Queensland,” Ms. Brumme-Smith said.

QMCA CEO Andrew Chapman highlighted the historic upswing in the industry’s trajectory, emphasizing the importance of the next five years.

“It will be crucial as we navigate the complexities of cost, capacity, and productivity to deliver on Queensland’s $92 billion project pipeline."

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Acting CEO Geoff Clare expressed that the upcoming surge in construction activity would pose a challenge to an industry that is already grappling with shortages in labor.

“The significant projected uplift in the construction industry in Queensland will push labour demand to record levels,” Mr Clare said.

“With shortages in construction already prevalent across all occupations, the industry’s struggle to find workers will intensify,"

“This will be acutely felt in the delivery of civil infrastructure projects and in the regions.”

The major projects outlined in the report will play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and job creation across the state. With a focus on collaboration and innovation, Queensland is poised for a transformative period in its infrastructure landscape.
