Basketball Queensland’s U14 Boys State Championships 'tip off' in Townsville

The 2019 Under 14 Boys State Basketball Championships will start this weekend in Townsville from 30 June to 3 July at the Murray Basketball Stadium.

Basketball Queensland’s State Championships is the premier representative basketball competition available to junior players across the State.

The State Championships provide a pathway for players to develop their basketball career with the potential to be identified into the Basketball Queensland High Performance Program.

Basketball Queensland’s State Championships Event Manager, Iain McLennan said this is the second consecutive year the Under 14 Boys State Championships will be held in Townsville after successfully hosting the 2018 competition.

“Up to 500 athletes are travelling from all over the State and it is a great opportunity to showcase the Townsville area,” said Mr McLennan.

“It is wonderful to have the Under 14 Boys in Townsville for another year after a fantastic tournament in 2018 and we are excited to have Townsville Basketball put on another great event in 2019.”

Continuing its support of local events, peak economic development and tourism body for the Townsville North Queensland region, Townsville Enterprise, threw its support behind the event to secure the Championships in Townsville.

“Townsville Enterprise is thrilled to assist in bringing Basketball Queensland’s U14 Boys State Championships to Townsville through funding supplied by the Townsville North Queensland Bid Fund,” said Townsville Enterprise CEO, Patricia O’Callaghan.

“It’s anticipated the four-day event will inject an estimated $1.39 million into the Townsville North Queensland economy, generated by the projected 1,300 event attendees.

“The Championships provide Townsville the opportunity to showcase its outstanding sporting facilities, as well as our extensive dining, shopping and tourism experiences for all attendees.”
