We are thrilled that this morning the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have announced its vision for a $50M Community and Sports Excellence Centre to be based alongside the new North Queensland Stadium.

The project is a part of the Townsville Enterprise 2019 Federal Government Budget Submission that was recently submitted to Treasury and forms a key part of our advocacy priorities to secure Townsville North Queensland's future.

Establishment of a Community and Sports Excellence Centre in Townsville will provide significant economic and social benefits to the region, including the growth of the city through the continued revitalisation of the CBD Priority Development Area (PDA) and establishing Townsville as a globally recognised destination for touring sporting teams. We acknowledge the efforts of Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel and Chairman Laurence Lancini to develop this proposal and the Cowboys' partnership with Townsville Enterprise to secure greater economic opportunities for our region.

The strong partnership between the Cowboys, James Cook University and Mater Health Services to deliver such an opportunity is to be commended, as is the commitment from these major local institutions to deliver local jobs and economic benefits to the community and broader region. This project is testament to the opportunities the new North Queensland Stadium can generate and the further private sector investment catalytic infrastructure in the Townsville CBD can provide. The targeted priorities included in Townsville Enterprise’s 2019 Federal Government Budget Submission have been defined based on their capacity to stimulate economic growth, encourage industry and private sector investment, influence business confidence and create jobs, which is now more important than ever. Governments will play a key role in the economic recovery of North Queensland following the recent weather event, and the economy building package outlined in our Submission is about giving communities and people hope for a better future. We encourage the Federal Government to continue working in close partnership with the North Queensland community to fast-track investment and implement policies that will not only get the region back on its feet following the floods, but transform the region and ensure the North realises its true potential.

It's been an incredibly positive week for our region, with today's announcement from the Cowboys following Federal Government funding commitments towards activating Castle Hill, the Townsville Airport redevelopment and Phase Two of the Museum of Underwater Art. As we draw closer to a Federal Election we anticipate this spotlight to only shine even brighter on our region, and we look forward to working with all parties across the political divide to secure further funding commitments to support the recovery and growth of the North.
