Advocacy Alert: Airport NAIF loan a welcomed boost for the community

6th March 2019

Townsville Enterprise welcomes today's announcement from Minister for Northern Australia, Senator Matt Canavan confirming the Federal Government's Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) will provide a $50M loan towards the Townsville Airport redevelopment.

Through a substantial terminal refurbishment, improved road access and an upgrade to all core infrastructure, this project will support 207 construction jobs and 50 operational jobs upon completion. Importantly, the redevelopment will provide the Townsville North Queensland community a world-class airport they can be proud of and a welcoming and seamless experience for visitors.

The airport is not only a gateway to Townsville, but the gateway to Northern Australia, and as a major economic contributor to the north, the Townsville Airport plays a crucial role in securing future opportunities for the region. Strong inbound visitation is key to boosting the Townsville North Queensland economy, with the airport an integral component of the region’s tourism industry.

For Townsville North Queensland to continue to prosper and attract new visitors and business, the first and final impressions of our city, primarily delivered through the airport, are pivotal in providing even more reasons to visit and invest in the region.

We acknowledge Senator for Queensland Ian Macdonald, Member for Dawson George Christensen and LNP Candidate for Herbert Phillip Thompson for their support towards this redevelopment and commend Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) on its determination to see this important project secure the commitments necessary to ensure it's progression.
