2019 Federal Election: Next Steps for North Queensland

20th May 2019

On Saturday we saw the return of the Morrison Government, as well as the Member for Dawson, George Christensen and Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, with the addition of Phillip Thompson in the seat of Herbert. Congratulations to all elected representatives.

We thank Ian Macdonald for his long service to the North and look forward to working with newly elected Senator Susan McDonald who will be based in Townsville and of course originally heralds from North Western Queensland - a region important to us. Townsville Enterprise also thanks Cathy O’Toole for her passion and dedication to our community and wish her the best for the future.

It has been a 10 month Federal Election advocacy campaign for Townsville Enterprise, since we launched in Canberra in August, and this week we are clear on what needs to be delivered for our community. Over 400 million dollars’ worth of commitments was secured for our region since that launch, including stage two of the Haughton water pipeline, the Port’s channel widening, Hells Gates, DriveIt and fixing Palm Island’s water supply, and we are getting on with the job to support their delivery.

It was great to see the newly elected Member for Herbert hit the ground running, today meeting with Townsville Enterprise where he acknowledged the importance of "businesses as the engine room of the economy" as well as "securing jobs for the future of North Queensland". The wheels are already in motion to get the region in front of the Morrison Government in Canberra once the Ministry is settled and we look forward to working with Phil to secure those meetings as soon as possible.

Last weekend the regions of Queensland sent our politicians a very strong message that the Galilee Basin is vitally important to our community. It’s about jobs, not politics, and North Queenslanders deserve and need this opportunity, along with others. Townsville Enterprise will continue to reflect a broad cross section of community views, evidenced by the overwhelming response and vote on the Galilee by representatives from all political backgrounds – except the green activists of course.

Townsville Enterprise looks forward to working alongside all of our elected representatives to secure every opportunity for the North. We will continue to be a loud voice for North Queensland – along with the community, to ensure our important local issues are heard in Canberra and Brisbane.
