We welcome today's landmark announcement of the $2.4 billion investment by the Crisafulli Government in the CopperString project, announced ahead of the upcoming State Budget. This commitment marks a $1.4 billion increase on last year’s allocation and reinforces the government’s determination to deliver this nation-building infrastructure.
CopperString has long been the number one infrastructure priority for North Queensland, unlocking energy security, industrial growth, and renewable investment across the region. For more than a decade, Townsville Enterprise has championed the critical importance of this project.
Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith said today’s announcement represents a defining moment for the North and the nation.
"Today the Crisafulli Government backs the north to give certainty to industry, to our councils, and most importantly the investors, so that we can build the windfarms and the mines of the future."
"CopperString is the single most important enabling project in Northern Australia, with more than 40% of our $40 billion investment pipeline dependent on the delivery of this transmission line between Townsville and Mount Isa."
"We have always said that without transmission, there is no transition. With vast renewable energy resources along the CopperString corridor, this investment cements the Government's commitment to a greener future and economic growth for North Queensland."
This is not just a regional project - it's about safeguarding the future of Australia's critical minerals industry and delivering long-term energy security for the nation."
Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki said the significant investment demonstrates the Government’s determination to save and deliver CopperString.
"Our words matter and when we said we're saving CopperString we meant it."
"We're committed to delivering investment and economic growth across the State, including our minerals-rich North West."
"We will continue to draw upon the expertise of QIC in assessing the project, including private sector investment."
"We'll continue to work with the local government to ensure CopperString delivers for North Queensland."
