State Election: Week 3 Wrap Up

17th November 2017

Throughout the third week of the Queensland State Election, the Townsville North Queensland region has welcomed key commitments from Labor, the Liberal National Party, One Nation and the Katter Party.

Commitments over the past seven days towards DriveIt, the Mount Isa to Townsville Rail Line, the Museum of Underwater Art, Lithium-Ion Battery Plant and the North Queensland Defence Agenda are welcomed; however, we still need to secure bipartisan support across a number of other projects and policies critical to our region (tomorrow’s Townsville Bulletin will include the Townsville Enterprise ‘Election Scorecard’ detailing the status of each Townsville North Queensland Election Priority thus far).

Commitments around water security and cheaper electricity all aim to create jobs and enhance liveability in Townsville North Queensland. But we don’t see South East Queensland having to fight for some of these basic necessities. It is absolutely imperative we secure a sustainable water supply and cheaper power for our homes and businesses – as is new tourism infrastructure and the development of our region’s industries.

Queensland’s leaders must represent the whole of the State’s interests and not just the South East. Much of the commentary in last night's Sky News Leaders Debate was formed from the opinions of South East Queensland, which is why it is vital to take this discussion north to tackle the issues that matter most to those living in North Queensland.

We want to hear a lot more from every party about what their plans are for Townsville North Queensland and how they can ensure our city and region will prosper. We are still yet to hear confirmations from the Premier and Opposition Leader for next week's Townsville based Debate of the Leaders, to answer the questions relevant to North Queensland voters. As it stands, we have received confirmations from One Nation's Steve Dickson and the Katter Party's Robbie Katter.

Our region has been doing it tough for far too long. We need targeted government assistance to support growth, attract investment and stimulate business confidence. With only one week to go, Townsville Enterprise will continue to be a loud voice for Townsville North Queensland during this State Election, fighting for the projects and policies that will secure our region's future for generations to come.
