Bid Fund lures Australia’s best junior table tennis players to Townsville

Over 300 of Australia’s best junior table tennis players have been competing in the 2018 San-Ei Australian Junior Table Tennis Championships at the Townsville Stadium over the weekend.

Every State and Territory is featuring at the event from 29 September – 6 October, including a strong 43-member Queensland Team. A number of current Australian junior team members has been in action at the event, including Queenslanders Mateo Dvorani and Benjamin Gould.

Table Tennis Queensland Executive Officer, Jason Walsh has been looking forward to bringing the national event to Townsville.

“We’ve been very excited to host the 2018 San-Ei Australian National Junior Table Tennis Championships in Townsville,” said Mr Walsh.

“Given the event is on a rotational basis between the respective states and territories it’s the first time the event has been held in Queensland for eight years.

“The support from the Queensland Government and Townsville Enterprise has made it possible to bring the event to the region.”

Continuing its support of local events, Townsville Enterprise is proud to provide funding assistance to secure the Championships in Townsville.

“Townsville Enterprise is thrilled to assist in bringing the 2018 Australian National Junior Table Tennis Championships to Townsville through funding supplied by the Townsville North Queensland Bid Fund,” said Tourism & Events Director, Bridget Woods.

“It’s anticipated that the eight-day event will inject an estimated $1.9 million into the Townsville North Queensland economy, generated by the projected 927 event attendees.

“The Championships also provides Townsville the opportunity to showcase its outstanding sporting facilities, as well as our extensive dining, shopping and tourism experiences for all attendees.”

The Queensland Government, via the Department of Housing and Public Works, have also provided support towards bringing the event to Townsville. In addition, various assets gifted to Table Tennis Queensland from the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be used during the event.
