Advocacy Alert: Townsville Secures Adani FIFO Jobs

5th October 2017

Today is a great day for our region with Adani Australia announcing it has made a deal with the Townsville City Council to base a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) hub in Townsville to service the Carmichael Mine Project. A second hub will be located in Rockhampton.

In addition, the Townsville deal secures Adani's Regional Headquarters in Townsville for the next 30 years with a minimum of up to 150 jobs guaranteed.

Servicing the Carmichael Mine in a FIFO capacity will create 1,200 local jobs during construction of the mine and up to 750 jobs during its operation for over 30 years. This will inject an estimated $90 million into our local economy each year.

Townsville City Council will jointly invest with Rockhampton to establish the infrastructure required for the FIFO workforce at the mine's site in the Galilee Basin. (click here for more information)

This is welcomed news for our region after a challenging few years, with both announcements generating real jobs and real economic stimulus for Townsville North Queensland. Securing Adani's FIFO jobs builds upon Townsville's involvement in the largest single infrastructure and job creating development in Australia's recent history. On top of securing the Adani Headquarters last year, this announcement will assist the future growth and prosperity of Townsville North Queensland and has confirmed the significant employment opportunities that will be delivered to thousands of regional Queenslanders.

Adani has already invested $3.3 billion into the project including purchasing the Abbot Point bulk coal handling port and appointing Downer Mining for the construction and operation of the Carmichael Mine. The company has also announced contracts totalling more than $150 million for railway tracks and concrete sleepers for the rail link between the mine and Abbot Point, as well as a further contract awarded to Townsville based company, AECOM, to complete surveying and design for the rail link. The AECOM deal alone will generate 70 Townsville based jobs.

This generational project will be the first new coal basin opened in Australia in 50 years and is the largest investment an Indian company has ever made in Australia. Adani’s Carmichael Project is much more than just the lifespan of one mine. By opening up the Galilee Basin, a projected 16,000 additional jobs will be created by future mines operating in the region, delivering ongoing opportunities for regional Queensland for decades.

Townsville Enterprise acknowledges Council's investment into this initiative and looks forward to continuing its relationship with Adani Australia and working with the company on delivering maximum employment opportunities for Townsville North Queensland.
