Unlock the North: The Burdekin Edition

We've been back on the road for our Unlock the North Road Trip series, but this time heading south to one of the biggest sugar cane growing areas in Australia - The Burdekin!

Similarly to our North West Road Trip in September, where we highlighted the importance of the North West corridor to the future of Northern Australia, we are now shining the spotlight on the contribution the Burdekin makes to the national economy.

Across the day we highlight the innovative developments in the region, as well as the challenges facing council, project proponents, growers, and industry, and how policy tweaks and investment will enable the realisation of emerging opportunities.

We were thrilled to be joined by Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin across the day including meetings and site visits with:

  • The RegenAqua Macro Algae Project
  • Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin, CEO Terry Brennan, Economic Development Coordinator Eliza Lovell
  • Member for Burdekin, Dale Last MP
  • Fourth generation cane farmer and VMK Group Managing Director, Mark Vass
