Funding Announcement: Museum of Underwater Art

19th August 2020

The Queensland Government has today announced a further $1M towards the Museum of Underwater Art, Phase 3. This funding will enable the extension of the MOUA project to Magnetic Island and will deliver a unique intertidal and snorkeling tourism experience for visitors and the local community.

Today's announcement comes just weeks after the official launch of the John Brewer Reef site, which has drawn global media attention and is already driving visitation to the region. We would like to acknowledge and thank the Queensland Government, in particular Member for Townsville Scott Stewart, for supporting this visionary project which will deliver economic benefits to our region for many years to come.

As recently as last week, Townsville Enterprise along with Taskforce NQ and NQROC took this project to Parliament to emphasise its critical importance in unlocking the region's tourism potential. MORE>

Townsville North Queensland is the global centre of excellence for marine science, education and research, and this project provides our region the opportunity to leverage our strengths and deliver a world-class eco-tourism experience which is already placing the region on the global tourism stage. This project will strengthen the region’s art and reef experiences and will be critical to supporting the State’s recovery from COVID-19.

MOUA Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation which is driven by a passionate board under the leadership of Chairman Paul Victory. The vision and tireless efforts of this board needs to be acknowledged, this is a significant project for our region that will help us to further define ourselves as the headquarters of the Great Barrier Reef and a place to immerse, learn and be inspired by nature.

Quote from Paul Crocombe, Adrenalin Dive

"As a tourism operator traditionally dependant on international visitation, COVID-19 has had a drastic impact on our business. The recent launch of the Museum of Underwater Art on John Brewer Reef has seen unprecedented media coverage and our tours are quickly booking out. MOUA has so far helped my business survive what has been the toughest year in my 32 years of operating. Investment into Stage 3 on Magnetic Island is going to further support awareness of our region's spectacular reef experiences and gives another reason for visitors to stay longer and enjoy the paradise we call home."
