CEO Column - November

29th November 2018

What a month it has been for Townsville and North Queensland!

Within 10 days our region received over $400 million in funding commitments from Prime Minister Morrison and the Federal Government.

We welcomed $200 million to fully fund Stage 2 of the Haughton Pipeline and $54 million to kick start phase 1 of the Hells Gates Dam Project.

Water security is the number one priority leading our Federal Election package and with commitments for Stage 2 of the water pipeline from both major parties, this has been assured for the next 50 years.

Bipartisan commitments will always be the target because this isn’t about taking sides, it’s about the future of Townsville and North Queensland.

We have also maintained a firm focus on job creation with Hells Gates estimated to create up to 12,000 jobs. Hells Gates has the potential to transform our economy and we will continue working towards next stages with Government to ensure this project remains on track.

The announcements, made outside of an election cycle, are unprecedented for North Queensland, and the result of a united effort from our region’s private and public representatives. The strategy of singing from the same hymn sheet has proved exceptionally effective and ensured the needs of our community were put first and heard loud and clear in Canberra.

While we are heading in the right direction, our role is to keep the pressure on and the momentum rolling. This is just the beginning of an exciting pre-election period for our region and I suggest strapping in.
