Accessing the Adani Opportunity
The Adani Carmichael Coal Mine and Rail Project will be an open cut and underground coal mine initially producing 25 million tonnes per annum to be transported over a multi user open access 388km railway line and exported via the Abbot Point Coal Terminal.
The mine, rail and port project will entail investment of $16.5B and contribute thousands of jobs to the Queensland economy while supplying thermal coal to India. Coal generated from the mine will be shipped directly to India and used by the Adani Group in their coal-fired power stations. The project is located around 340km south west of Townsville and is the first of a number of significant projects to be potentially developed within the Galilee Basin. The catalytic rail and port infrastructure that will be established resultant of the Carmichael Mine development will support further investment, development and job creation in the northern Galilee region.
Adani Australia has recently announced it has negotiated a deal with the Townsville City Council to base a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) hub in Townsville to service the Carmichael Mine Project. In addition, the Townsville deal secures Adani's Regional Headquarters in Townsville for the next 30 years.
This is welcomed news for our region after a challenging few years, with both announcements generating real jobs and real economic stimulus for Townsville North Queensland. Securing Adani's FIFO jobs builds upon Townsville's involvement in the largest single infrastructure and job creating development in Australia's recent history.
