The Townsville North Queensland region is a diverse holiday destination with abundant natural attractions, including the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, tropical islands, pristine beaches, Wet Tropics rainforests and national parks as well as the historic outback. The destination enjoys a tropical climate and offers visitors a relaxing combination of city life and natural and heritage attractions.
The North Queensland region has a diverse economy, of which tourism accounts for approximately 5 percent of the region’s economic value and 7 percent of regional employment.
The numerous attractions on offer within the Townsville North Queensland region has seen the destination’s popularity rapidly increase over recent years, receiving just under one million visitors in 2008.
The Great Barrier Reef is a ‘wonder’ of the natural world and every year millions of visitors from around the globe experience its beauty. Our proximity to the reef and established port and marina infrastructure make Townsville an ideal location for the investment and development of reef-orientated tourism products.
Anecdotal evidence from established Townsville-based travel/booking agents indicates that visitor requests for reef day-trips from Townsville are common and increasing in frequency.
