Mining & Minerals
Mining is a significant industry in the North Queensland region, contributing 8% to the regional economy in 2008/09. According the to North East Mineral Province Economic Potential report by James Cook University, there are 21 mineral deposits being explored for viability in the North East Mineral Province. These deposits have the potential output of $730 million a year till 2020, adding to the $473 million a year to 2020 from the existing mining operations.

Renewable Energy: Queensland’s Clean Energy Corridor
The regions around our great city have enormous potential for renewable energy projects to feed an ever growing demand. Powerlink, the State’s transmission provider, estimates that by 2015/16 the Townsville region will require around 11,500 GWh, a 16.5% increase from 2010 demand, requiring an additional supply of 1,630 GWh.
Queensland’s Clean Energy Corridor, the region between Townsville and Mount Isa, will be fed by an 800 km long, 275kV AC transmission line that will extend Australia’s national electricity grid to Queensland’s rich North West Minerals Province. The Clean Energy Corridor potentially has major opportunities for large scale solar, wind, geothermal and biomass electricity generation.
The transmission line infrastructure traversing the Corridor will eventually supply over 500MW of energy to major mining customers in the North West Minerals Province and support the long-term expansion of the region by providing high capacity access to its considerable renewable energy resources
