Sun Metals shine bright to support local hospitality industry

1st May 2020

Townsville’s hospitality sector will feel the warm support from one of the city’s major employers after partnering with Townsville Enterprise on its Buy Now, Holiday Later campaign.

Sun Metals are continuing to do their bit for the region through the COVID-19 crisis, purchasing all 300 of their employees a voucher from a list of local cafes, restaurants, and pubs as a part of Townsville Enterprise’s recently launched Buy Now, Holiday Later campaign.

Buy Now, Holiday Later has been designed to provide operators immediate cash support by encouraging the purchase of online gift cards and also keeping Townsville North Queensland top-of-mind to encourage future travel when it is safe to do so.

A flyer will be distributed to Sun Metals staff on Friday outlining the selection of meals, gift hampers and hospitality packages offered by local businesses for staff to select and be paid for by the company.

Townsville Enterprise Tourism and Events Director, Lisa Woolfe said this was this exact intention of the campaign to help support an industry that has been facing its darkest days.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the generosity from Sun Metals and for providing a ray of hope to our local businesses doing it tough,” said Ms Woolfe.

“Sun Metals are giving all their staff a tangible opportunity to support the local tourism and hospitality industry and we hope to engage even more companies with the initiative to help give these businesses some much needed cash-flow during this difficult time.

“Now more than ever its essential our community buy local as much as possible and this is an innovative way for a large local employer to support the businesses that were some of the first and hardest hit from the impacts of COVID-19.”

The Buy Now, Holiday Later campaign has so far sold more than 100 packages across the North Queensland region and has already put tens of thousands of dollars back into the banks of the local tourism and hospitality industry.

Sun Metals CEO, Kiwon Park said he was pleased to be able to partner with Townsville Enterprise to make this happen.

“We wanted to say thank you to our employees and provide some encouragement for them and their families during this challenging time,” Mr Park said.

“Townsville Enterprise gave us a solution to do this while also supporting the community.

“We are pleased that Townsville Logistics and Townsville Marine Logistics have joined us in this initiative, where combined, our thank you to almost 400 employees will provide some relief to local vendors and we hope that other companies are able to come on board.”

Hospitality businesses that have signed up so far to be a part of the campaign include Shorehouse, Jam, Bridgewater, Cowboys Leagues Club, The Ville Resort Casino, Ottos Fresh Food Market, Bakehouse on Eyre and Absolute Cravings.

Ms Woolfe said that global tourism leaders suggest the industry will play a pivotal role in rebuilding economies post-COVID-19, making the immediate support of Townsville’s $1.26 billion tourism industry all the more important.

“The tourism and hospitality industry is an essential component of our economy and lifestyle and we encourage anyone who wants to give back to visit townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au to review our selection of Buy Now, Holiday Later options,” said Ms Woolfe.

“Take the pledge to play in our paradise by purchasing a holiday gift card, or you could simply register online to receive newsletter updates and stay engaged with our tourism industry.”
